Artist Statement
This exhibition is a selection of photographs taken across New York City over the course of the last 8 years. For me, these photos are an attempt to visually represent the way the city of New York forms and shapes its residents–how we grow to fill the deteriorating urban spaces in which our hopes, our fears, and our conflicts intersect. Much of the tension and drama here is a product of the palpable evasiveness present across many of the selected works; shadow, reflection, distance and silhouette permeate the visual language of these images and keep the viewer at arm’s length.
The title of this exhibition, “Chasing Pigeons,” is taken from its eponymous photograph of a young boy in Brooklyn sprinting through a flock of pigeons and scattering them in all directions because it mirrors the childlike curiosity and anxious frenzy at the core of street photography. Identifying the right moment to photograph is like trying to catch a moving, winged target–its very nature is to escape, to disappear, to slip through your fingers in the blink of an eye. Thus, the fundamental driving force behind my work is to live in that cathartic feeling of finally holding the pigeon between your hands.
